- The Executive Director, Normanne Potter, is available to speak to community organizations about the Columbia World Affairs Council and Columbia as an international city.
The Columbia World Affairs Council is a non-profit, non-partisan member of the Washington, D.C.-based National Council of World Affairs Organizations -- a fast growing network of world affairs councils throughout the United States.
Its mission is two-fold:
(1) to provide a dynamic platform through which people in the Columbia region can further their knowledge and understanding of important international economic, political and social issues, events and opportunities, and
(2) to serve as a catalyst in facilitating and promoting international activities in the Columbia region. The Columbia World Affairs Council offers people in South Carolina direct contact with key international figures, networking with Columbia's growing international community and the discussion of critical issues, ranging from foreign policy to international business and global culture. If an evening with a European Ambassador or private luncheon with the Director of Information for the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or a seminar on how Germany skillfully dealt with national health care sounds interesting, then the Columbia World Affairs Council is definitely for you.
The Columbia region is one of the fastest developing international business centers in the Southeast. There are currently more than 35 international companies located here, representing more than a dozen countries. And companies based in Columbia are developing significant markets in Canada, Europe, Latin America, Africa, Mexico, the Middle East, the Republics of the former Soviet Union, the Far East, and Australia. The growing reputation of the University of South Carolina in the international arena is reflected by USC's Master of International Business Studies (MIBS) program being ranked tops in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. And the City of Columbia's sister city relationship with several international cities certainly adds to the area's growing international interest.
